How to save money while in Sweden

Exploring Sweden doesn’t have to blow your budget.
Here are some travel tips to save money while on holiday!

  • Travel during spring or autumn for better deals on flights and accommodation. These months are quieter, offering more affordable options and fewer tourists, especially before the high season begins in June.
  • Dining out? Switch pricey restaurants for food halls serving traditional delights like herring and lingonberry jam, and try budget-friendly Swedish street food like kottbullar (Swedish meatballs), tunnbrodsrulle (flatbread wraps), and smörgås (open-faced sandwiches).
  • Use Sweden’s world-class public transport to zip around in style. Trains, buses, and the metro in cities like Stockholm and Gothenburg offer budget-friendly options to get around.
  • Take advantage of free attractions like the charming streets of Gamla Stan (the Old Town) in Stockholm, or  hikes through Sweden’s serene forests. You can also take a stroll along Monteliusvägen for stunning views, or exploring Djurgården island – all without paying entry fees.
  • Convert NZD to SEK with Travel Money NZ and stretch your Krona for maximum Scandi-style adventures.

Swedish notes and coins

It’s pretty unlikely you’ll come across any öre coins – they were discontinued in September 2010.

Since then, there have only been 3 coins in circulation, worth kr1, kr5 and kr10 a piece.

There are only 5 notes beyond that, valued at kr20, kr50, kr100, kr200 and kr500.

Fun facts about Swedish cash

  • The 20 SEK note stars Astrid Lindgren, creator of Pippi Longstocking, with imagery of lush Småland forests.
  • The 50 SEK note honours opera diva Birgit Nilsson, while the 100 SEK showcases Carl Linnaeus, the father of taxonomy.
  • The 500 SEK note pays tribute to Dag Hammarskjöld, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, with scenic views of Lapland.

Travel Money Trivia - Sweden edition

  • Like a number of currencies around the world, the ‘krona’ translates to ‘crown’ in English.
  • A lot of Swedes are cashless – they have enough faith in their electronic systems that they never carry cash.
  • The krona is perhaps even more travelled than you – sitting as the 11th most traded currency in the world.
  • The Swedish Krona (SEK) has been Sweden’s official currency since 1873, when it replaced the Riksdaler as part of the Scandinavian Monetary Union.

Good to know

  • Make sure to declare anything greater than 10,000 euros (or the equivalent across any currencies) on your way into Sweden.
